October 2018 was when the seeds for Grafton Digital were planted. From my own personal experience working in various marketing agencies, I was underwhelmed by the time and effort given to social media. Most agencies marketed social media management as an add on service. This lack of attention to social media marketing presented me with an opportunity. In my opinion, it is crucial for companies to stay up to date with social media trends and effectively market themselves online. Social Media Marketing is a full-time job in itself, not an add on feature.
Erik, Jack and I began to make plans for our new business. After extensive research we decided to offer the following services: Website Development, Social Media Management and Content Creation, offering a one-stop-shop for all digital marketing needs. Next on the to-do list was to decide on a company name. Erik, Jack and I brainstormed names for over a month, uncertain on what name to go forward with. Grow Media, Fás Media and Mór Media were all strong contenders until we eventually landed on Grafton Digital.
The beginning is always difficult, and the formation of Grafton Digital was no different. Our lack of portfolio and experience made the beginning months an uphill battle. In order to build our portfolio and be taken seriously in the industry, we utilised our local network, securing our first job creating a promotional video for a local gym. To help accelerate our growth we charged considerably under market value to attract more business and help build our portfolio. This also allowed us to experiment in an array of different industries, building experience at an exponential rate.
Like any start-up company, we had limited amounts of capital to work of, so we had to be careful with our investments. Fortunately, Josette Farrell who runs a local community space, Claregalway Hub, was kind enough to let us use the space as our first office, helping us kickstart our careers.
Fast forward to today and we have grown in all aspects of the business. We now have a dedicated team behind us, our own office space, an in-house studio and a wide client base. In two years we have expanded, built a portfolio and made a name for ourselves. Personally, I am extremely excited for what the future has to offer.
